Assignment: Masonry Rehabilitation
Duration: 1 Year (1997)
Project Value: $425,000

As part of the continuing maintenance program, the distressed parapet walls along the Balbo Street elevation of this prestigious Michigan Avenue hotel were rebuilt along with the northwest corner. The outer wythe of masonry at the corner was rebuilt with integrated expansion joints to accommodate movement at the corners. Underlying support steel at the corners was also reconstructed in conjunction with the rebuild. Parapet walls were completely demolished down to the structural steel beam and rebuilt. Although new brick masonry was used to rebuild the parapet walls, the decorative limestone belt coursings, balusters and copings were salvaged and reinstalled.
